Aortic Aneurysm

Restoring structural integrity to the body’s main lifeline through expert surveillance and precision endovascular repair.

Understanding your Aneurysm

An aneurysm is an abnormal weakening and enlargement of a blood vessel. Over time, an aneurysm can grow and may become dangerous if it ruptures or causes blood clots. Many aneurysms develop silently and are found during imaging for another reason.

At Vascular Surgeons of Houston, we provide comprehensive aneurysm care, including diagnosis, surveillance, minimally invasive endovascular repair, and open surgical repair when needed.

Types of Aneurysms We Treat

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm

  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm

  • Iliac artery aneurysm

  • Femoral artery aneurysm

  • Popliteal artery aneurysm

  • Splenic and visceral artery aneurysms

Symptoms of an Aneurysm

Many aneurysms have no symptoms. Possible warning signs may include:

Pulsing sensation in the abdomen

Abdominal, back, chest, or flank pain

Leg pain, numbness, or discoloration

Blue or painful toes

Sudden severe pain

Sudden severe chest, back, or abdominal pain may be an emergency and should be evaluated immediately.

How Aneurysms Are Diagnosed?

Testing may include vascular ultrasound, CT angiography or diagnostic angiography. These studies help determine the aneurysm size, location, anatomy, and risk of rupture.

Treatment Options

Monitoring and Surveillance

Small aneurysms may be monitored with routine imaging, blood pressure control, cholesterol management, and smoking cessation.

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair

Many aneurysms can be repaired through small groin incisions using a stent graft placed inside the blood vessel. This minimally invasive approach may allow for faster recovery and less discomfort.

Open Surgical Repair

For complex aneurysms or anatomy not suited for stent repair, open surgery may be the safest and most durable option. The weakened section of artery is replaced or bypassed with a surgical graft.
