Dr. Neil Desai will provide specific postoperative instructions tailored to your unique type of surgery. Below are the standard, general guidelines every patient must follow after a procedure.

24-Hour Restrictions
Do not drink alcohol, drive, operate machinery, or sign legal documents for 24 hours. The effects of anesthesia can last a full day.

Take pain-relieving medications with food. After the first 48 hours, take pain medication only when absolutely needed to manage discomfort.

Use ice packs liberally for the first 48 hours. Ensure the ice bag does not leak into the dressing to keep the area sterile.

Rest for a few days. Keep the operated extremity elevated above the level of your heart to effectively manage pain and swelling.

Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated drinks to support your body's recovery phase.

Call Dr. Desai Immediately IF there is:
Increased drainage from the incision site
Increased redness around the operated area
Persistent swelling that does not decrease
Noticeable foul odor from the wound
Fever greater than 101°F
Coldness, numbness, or bluish color in extremities
Sudden calf pain or shortness of breath
Sudden chest pain
Regular exercise is critical for a successful outcome. Try to begin physical therapy a day or two after the surgery as advised.
